What it is

Grit Guides Pro puts a designer's rulers and guides inside the Final Cut Pro viewer.

Drop it on your timeline as a title, or on an adjustment layer as an effect. Rulers number every pixel along the top and left edges. Drag a guide in the viewer or type its position, and it snaps to the thirds, the center, the golden-ratio lines, the safe zones and the other guides.

Then check the delivery: title and action safe, each social app's buttons and captions over your vertical edit, and how a shot crops anywhere from 2.39:1 to 9:16.

Try it

Drag the cyan guides. They snap to the thirds, the center, the golden-ratio lines and each other, and their numbers follow in the rulers, just as they do in Final Cut. Counted in a 4K frame.

Drag a guide, or select one with Tab and move it with the arrow keys.

Features

Guides snapping to the thirds, with their pixel positions in the ruler
Guides

Guides that work like a design tool

Drag them in the viewer or type a number. Each guide's pixel position shows right in the ruler.

  • Snaps to thirds, the center, the golden-ratio lines, safe zones and other guides
  • Show Spacing measures every gap, in pixels
  • Rulers number the frame in your project's own size
Ten vertical and ten horizontal guides over a frame
Guides

Up to 10 guides each way

Ten vertical and ten horizontal, for a lower third, a logo lockup, a product that has to land in the same place every shot.

Guides

Mirror pairs

Guides move in pairs: drag one and its partner mirrors it across the center. Symmetric margins in one move.

Ruler numbers staying sharp when the viewer is zoomed in
Drawing

Sharp at any size

Lines and numbers are drawn for the viewer you're looking at, so they stay crisp from a laptop screen to a 5K display, zoomed in or not.

Composition grids: thirds, golden ratio, phi and custom
Composition

Every grid you frame with

Each with its own color and opacity.

  • Rule of thirds, golden ratio, phi grid, fifths
  • Golden triangle, harmonic armature, diagonals, center cross
  • Custom grid, and a layout grid with columns, rows, margins and gutters

Delivery New

Each app's own screen

Safe zones for Instagram Reels, TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Stories, or all of them at once. App Screen draws the app's buttons, caption and tabs over your video, so you see it the way viewers will before you post.

  • Instagram's profile grid crop: the 3:4 part of a Reel's cover your profile shows
  • YouTube's player controls and an end screen's videos and Subscribe button
Title safe, action safe and aspect ratio outlines
Delivery

Delivery checks and aspect ratios

Title safe, action safe and the 4:3 center cut. See how a shot crops at 2.39:1, 1.85:1, 4:5 or 9:16, as outlines or letterbox bars, or outline 9:16, 4:5, 1:1 and 16:9 at once, labeled, for one edit cut to several shapes.

Before you export

The title or effect shows in exports like any other. Use Save as Viewer Overlay, or disable its clip (press V) before you share.

How to
Does it show in my export?

Yes, like any title or effect. Disable its clip (press V) or turn off Show Overlay before you export. Or save your setup as a Viewer Overlay: Final Cut shows it in the viewer only.

Does it work in vertical projects?

Yes. It works out 16:9, 4:3, vertical, 4:5, square and cinema-wide projects on its own. For 2.39:1 and 21:9, use the effect on an adjustment layer: a title only covers the middle 16:9.

Title or effect: which one?

Both draw the same overlay with the same controls. A title sits above your clips; the effect goes on an adjustment layer and covers the whole frame, whatever its shape.

Can I share my presets?

Yes. Open the Grit Guides Pro app and use its Presets menu to export yours to a file. Another editor imports it into theirs.
